Benefit fraud

Summary

Benefit fraud is now investigated by the Single Fraud Investigation Service [SFIS] based at the Department for Work and Pensions [DWP].  They conduct investigations covering the totality of welfare benefit and tax credit fraud.

You can report suspected benefit fraud in 3 ways

In 2014/15 the authority undertook:

  • 10 Successful Prosecutions
  • 2 Official Cautions
  • 3 Administrative Penalties 

The above individuals fraudulently claimed £69,869 in Housing and Council Tax Benefit, £3,136 Local Council Tax Support plus a further £22,862 in other Social Security Benefits.

In 2015/16 [up to 1/2/16] the authority undertook:

  • 4 Successful Prosecutions
  • 3 Official Cautions
  • 1 Administrative Penalty 

The above individuals fraudulently claimed £30,938 in Housing and Council Tax Benefit, £4,338 Local Council Tax Support plus a further £10,250 in other Social Security Benefits.
